Your bedroom is the place for all things rest and relaxation. You can’t wait to escape to it at the end of the day when you’re all touched out and can’t stand to hear another “MOM! MOM!” And sometimes you might even spend all day there binging Love is Blind and eating your feelings/raw cookie dough. Cause you know, mental health days are important. Which is why your bedroom interior design should make you feel so damn good when you walk in that you never want to leave. Do you know what the secret special sauce is to make that happen? It’s all in the details, my friend. So here are six bedroom interior design details (and plenty of inspo) that make a bedroom a place where every inch surprises, delights, and brings you joy. I’m taking back that phrase from Marie Kondo. It’s time.
Bedroom Interior Design Detail No. 1: Patterned Sheets
Of course, you want your sheets to feel nice, but what if they were also fun to look at? Pulling back your big, fluffy duvet when you’re ready to crawl into bed and seeing a little bit of unexpected fun is such an easy way to put a smile on your face. Also-permission to leave your bed unmade in the morning–why bother covering up sheets that are meant to be seen. Take the fun up another notch by mixing up the patterns between the fitted sheet, flat sheet, and pillowcase, just like Rebecca Atwood did above. You are so crazy!
Here’s a few options for ya:
Bedroom Interior Design Detail No. 2: Lots of Layers
Layers turn an uninspired bedroom into a visual feast. Add layers to your bedroom floor with area rugs-a large rug under the bed or two smaller rugs on each side (like above). And area rugs aren’t just for wood floors-you can put that sucker right on top of wall-to-wall carpet. Add layers to your bed with a throw or coverlet (is that not the most Grandma word ever?) that contrasts with the rest of the bedding. You’d be surprised at the difference that a little extra color and texture make. And don’t forget the vertical space-it’s prime real estate for adding in layers. Bring in the artwork and dress up your windows with shades and curtains.
Detail No. 3: Elevated Lampshades
Most table lamps come with a plain white shade that recedes like a wallflower saying to itself, “Don’t look at me! Nothing to see here!” But swap that shy shade for something more exciting, and bam, you’ve got a lamp that enjoys having some attention thrown its way. Case in point: the bedroom above. The pleated block-print lampshades are exactly what those lamps needed.
Here are a few fun lampshades:
Detail No. 4: Walls With Depth and Character
A few coats of paint or some patterned wallpaper can completely change the look and feel of a space. And wallpaper doesn’t have to be bold and vibrant to make an impact. Subdued and understated can still pack a serious punch. Either way, it’s guaranteed to add character and personality. Just check out the bedroom above. Try to imagine it without the wallpaper. Not the same, right?
Detail No. 5: Greenery
Every room needs a plant. Yup, even your bedroom. Plants literally add life—they’re like nature’s sculptures, living art pieces that pull double duty by adding color AND texture. Check out Dabito’s bedroom above-he went above and beyond by using multiple plants with different shapes and color variations.
Side note: Just say no to fake plants. I don’t care how realistic you think it looks, there’s nothing like the real deal. If you’ve got a black thumb, ZZ plants and snake plants are pretty much impossible to kill and can go without water for weeks. Here are a few low-maintenance houseplants that’ll survive even the most neglectful plant parent:
Detail No. 6: Mismatched Furniture
Have you ever seen a bedroom with a matching furniture set in Architectural Digest? Heck no. Because bedroom furniture should be besties, each bringing out the best in the other, not clones forced into the same boring getup.
Take the bedroom above, for example. Emily Henderson chose a warm vintage wood dresser, a soft upholstered bed, and an industrial-style nightstand. All these pieces have clean, simple lines that create a look that harmonizes better than any boy band. It’s also way more exciting and dynamic to look at. If the bed and nightstand were part of the same set as the vintage dresser, it would feel like you were staying in a kitschy hotel. Sounds fun for one night, but everyday? Not the look you want.
So the secret to bedroom interior design that makes you weak in the knees? Pay attention to the details. Have some fun with your sheets, bring in layers and more layers, zhuzh up those lampshades, throw some color or pattern on the walls, bring in some plants, and stay far, far away from matching furniture.
